Part One
Peck, R. (2016). The Best Man. Dial Books for Young Readers.
Grades 5–8
Realistic Fiction / Young Adult
Part Two
I enjoyed reading The Best Man because it focused on realistic family relationships and what its like growing up. The story follows Archer as he learns important lessons about friendship, family, and acceptance. I liked that the characters felt believable and relatable because they had strengths and flaws just like real people. Throughout the story, Archer begins to better understand the adults in his life and the different experiences people go through.
Richard Peck’s writing style is both funny and meaningful. Even when the story discusses serious topics, the author includes moments of humor that make the book enjoyable to read. I also liked how the story showed the importance of accepting people for who they are. While reading this book with students, I would ask questions such as, “How does Archer change throughout the story?” and “What lessons does Archer learn from the adults around him?”
Part Three
The plot develops through important moments in Archer’s life and the relationships he builds with others. The setting feels realistic and helps readers connect to the story. One of the strongest themes in the novel is acceptance. The story teaches readers that families and friendships can look different for everyone and that understanding others is important.
The point of view allows readers to understand Archer’s thoughts and emotions clearly. Richard Peck’s writing style is simple but still emotional and thoughtful. Overall, I think this book is effective because it encourages empathy and talks about different types of relationships, identity, and family.
